The Tarn sportsmen stand out lately. It’s not just Benjamin Thomas, who is currently shining on the roads of the Tour de France, there are also basketball players. A Castrese and an Albigensian even ended up on top of the world a few days ago!
Firstly there is Myriam Djekoundade. If she started small in Orléans, the one who was born in 1998 in Castres, then played in his city and at Gaillac between 2007 and 2013. At 15, she then joined other clubs (Bourges, Lattes-Montpellier, Mondeville, etc.). She plays today Villeneuve d’Ascq (Nord), within the French elite (the club finished second in the season).
But she didn’t wait to be 24 to shine. She was already European champion under 18 in 2016 with the French team!
She wore the tricolor tunic many times afterwards, notably at the U19 world championships (quarter-finals).
Already a lot of medals
All that was in “traditional” basketball, five against five. But the Castraise is also comfortable in 3×3. In September 2021, she had won the Nations League gold medal with the France under-23 team in this discipline.
And now, therefore, she has worn the gold medal around her neck with the France team during the World Cup which was played in Antwerp (Belgium) end of June 2022. The tricolors beat Canada there.
And she is not the only one with talent to resell orange ball in hand in the Tarn. There is also Leopold Cavaliere.
Born in 1996 in Albi, the strong winger has spent most of his career at Pau-Lacq-Orthez. In 2020, he left Béarn to join Strasbourg.
Destination Paris 2024
Without denying his love of 3×3. Good for him, since he got the bronze medal in Antwerp, during the World Cup won by Serbia.
Now, the two Tarnais are simply aiming for the Paris Olympics in 2024, where the discipline will be present as since its Olympic accession in 2020.
As a reminder, this basketball is played three against three on a half court with a single basket and a few different rules.
