Targeting opposition party at torchlight vigil, presidential office ‘shakes constitutional order’

◀ Anchor ▶

As regards the participation of opposition parliamentarians in the torchlight procession held yesterday in central Seoul, the President’s Office condemned it as “a shock to the constitutional order”.

In this regard, the Democratic Party denied saying: “People’s criticisms are uncomfortable”.

From the prosecution’s investigation into the opposition party to the government’s investigation into the 10.29am disaster, the confrontation between the government and opposition parties is deepening.

Reporter Kim Jae-kyung covered the story.

A candlelight vigil held last night to discover the truth about the disaster of 10.29 and ask for the resignation of President Yoon Seok-yeol.

Seven opposition MPs attended, including six from the Democratic Party.

It is the first time that a large number of MPs from the Democratic Party have taken the podium at the rally on the 15th.

The Office of the President has defined it as ‘shaking the constitutional order’.

A presidential office official said: “It is undesirable for members of the National Assembly, a constitutional institution, to sympathize with statements that shake up the constitutional order.”

The People Power, the ruling party, went a step further and criticized “breathing with leftist civic groups” and “inducing social confusion through propaganda and incitement”.

“It looks like they got drunk at the memory of the candle first. Be careful. Then you’ll fall asleep.”

Democrats objected.

“Are you uncomfortable with people’s voices criticizing the government? If so, work properly so that no criticism comes out,” he asked.

I also said a word about the report that President Yoon Seok-yeol has decided not to meet with the opposition leader.

“This is a naive and absurd act. Meeting with government and opposition leaders is the seat of political responsibility for the economy and the lives of people in crisis”.

In the midst of this, President Yoon Seok-yeol decided to directly chair the export strategy meeting this Wednesday.

It appears to mean that he will focus on linking his tour results to the economy rather than communicating with the opposition party.

“The government will closely follow the diplomatic findings through the first export strategy meeting on the 23rd, so that it takes steps to revitalize the economy and restore people’s livelihoods.”

The three opposition parties plan to approve a parliamentary inquiry into the truth of the 10:29 am disaster in a plenary session on Thursday.

As the opposition party’s prosecution investigation, government investigation, budget bill, presidential office and confrontation between opposition parties intensify, the political situation is rapidly freezing.
