Jakarta –
A retail company called Target decided to close nine of its supermarket outlets in four states of the United States (US). This was done in line with the many thefts and robberies that occurred at a number of outlets.
Reporting from CNN, Thursday (28/9/2023), according to them, this condition is very worrying and could endanger shop employees and customers. Apart from that, organized theft and robbery caused the company’s profits to continue to decline to the point of losses.
In fact, the company previously admitted that Target estimates losses of US$ 500 million or the equivalent of Rp. 7.75 trillion (exchange rate of Rp. 15,500 per US dollar) this year due to increased theft.
“We cannot continue to operate these stores because the number of organized thefts and robberies threaten the safety of our employees and visitors,” Target said in a statement.
“We know that our stores play an important role in their communities, but we can only be successful if the working and shopping environment is safe for everyone,” they added.
Target plans to close these outlets on October 21, 2023. A number of outlets that will be closed are located in East Harlem, New York City; two locations in Seattle; three locations in Portland; and three locations in San Francisco and Oakland. Meanwhile, affected employees will be able to be transferred to other Target locations.
Beyond that, Target said it would continue to make significant investments to keep its 150 other stores in the four regions and nearly 2,000 stores nationwide safe. In addition to tighter security, the company also plans to partner with the US government to combat cases of retail theft.
As additional information, Target is not the first retailer to be forced to close its stores due to the many cases of theft and robbery that have occurred in the US. Previously, Nordstrom and Whole Foods chains had closed their stores in San Francisco.
