Memories can be shocking in football and it certainly looks a lot longer than it was just two months ago that we won the Champions League, but we won it and rather infallibly, even – in stark contrast to the miraculous race of 2012.
Manchester City, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and FC Porto: match after match, match after match, they all fell apart. Chelsea haven’t scored too many goals, but we’ve conceded even fewer – just two in the group stage and just two in the round of 16. Illustrating how difficult it was for Chelsea to crumble, the two goals conceded in the round of 16 would end up being nominated for the Champions League goal of the season.
And one of them would end up with the prize as well, as UEFA revealed on Thursday. Hello, Mehdi Taremi.
Luckily Taremi’s goal was only consolation for Porto in the dying moments of our second leg quarter-final (although you couldn’t judge from Edouard Mendy’s reaction) – unlike the kick. also nominated by Olivier Giroud, who was the only goal of our round of 16 first leg against Atlético Madrid. Alas, Oli did not win this award, but it can be assumed that he would prefer to have big ears anyway.
