The music drama “Tár” celebrated its German premiere at the Berlinale and is coming to cinemas this week. Actress Nina Hoss described her work with the Dresden Philharmonic as the highlight of her career.

The drama by US director and screenwriter Todd Field tells the story of the fictional star conductor Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) and her wife, the violinist and concertmaster (Nina Hoss) of a major German orchestra. Many of the scenes were filmed in Berlin, but a majority in Dresden, as the Dresden Philharmonic serves as the Berlin orchestra on screen and for the actual recording of the film’s soundtrack.

In an interview with the “dpa”, Nina Hoss described her collaboration with the Dresden Philharmonic as a highlight of her career: “It’s one of the greatest gifts and experiences I’ve had with my job so far, where you always go into other lives and professions,” said the 47-year-old. It is really something special to sit in the orchestra while making music – “I mean while they are playing”. She was particularly impressed by “this sound. This richness. This great beauty.”

Cate Blanchett is Oscar nominee as Lydia Tár for Best Lead

In January, Australian actress Cate Blanchett scooped up the statuette for Best Actress in a Drama at the Golden Globes Gala. Now she’s a top favorite in the same Oscar category for “Tàr”: Todd Field’s drama has been nominated for an Oscar six times. The gala will take place on the night of March 12-13 in Los Angeles. The drama starts nationwide in cinemas on Thursday.

The soundtrack was recorded by the Dresden Philharmonic, the London Contemporary Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra – with Natalie Murray Beale conducting. The soundtrack was released by Deutsche Grammophon – and is even available as a vinyl album.
