DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) — Tanzanian immigration authorities said on Tuesday that at least 2,940 illegal immigrants were arrested in the northwest Kagera region between January and June of this year.
Thomas Fussy, director of immigration services in Kagera region, said the migrants were arrested in a special operation that lasted six months.
The illegal immigrants arrested came from different countries, including Rwanda, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Somalia, Burundi, Uganda and Zambia, he said.
He said that 2,735 of these migrants had been sent back to their country of origin, while 183 were charged by courts for illegal stay, and 22 obtained a residence permit.
The official said most of the illegal immigrants were engaged in agricultural or animal husbandry activities.
Mr Fussy warned locals against hosting illegal immigrants, saying those involved would be prosecuted. End
