TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Former Minister of State -Owned Enterprises or BUMN, Tanri Abeng, highlighted the number of ministry officials who became commissioners of state-owned companies. He sees a potential conflict of interest if the regulator, which is supposed to oversee all sectors in his field, is involved in the affairs of state-owned corporations.
“They have very strategic positions. Time to take care of SOEs again?” said Tanri in a webinar on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.
Tanri said the regulators already have a strategic position in their respective agencies. According to him, the regulation of concurrent regulatory positions in state-owned companies should be discussed in the clause in the BUMN Draft Law (RUU).
Tanri gave an example of the position of commissioner at PT Pertamina (Persero) which is carried out by officials at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). It is undeniable that the official will show partiality.
Whereas as a regulator that oversees the operation of the oil and gas sector, it is natural for government officials to be neutral. Tanri also saw that many Ministry of Finance officials are currently commissioners in various state-owned companies.
