Tannane opens the score in Almelo, Spakenburg lives up to the duel with Ajax

Remarkable: it is the third time in five years that Vitesse is visiting the tournament for the KNVB cup in Almelo. Last year, Vitesse won 2-0 through goals from Martin Ødegaard and Thomas Buitink.

In 2015, Heracles won in a memorable and controversial game. Vitesse led with eight field players (after red cards for Ibarra, Nakamba and Kashia) to the 94th minute with 1-0. In the ten minutes added time, the Vitesse-trained Robin Gosens made 1-1, after which Heracles struck in the extension: 4-1.

The then Heraclied Oussama Tannane missed a penalty in that game shortly before time, but in the extension did hit eleven meters.

Trainer Peter Bosz was also sent to the stands in that memorable game.
