Tankers Carrying Oil and LNG Collide in the Suez Canal, Disrupting Traffic

On the night of August 23, tankers carrying oil and LNG collided in the Suez Canal. Vessels are stretching their tugs so as not to stop traffic. Both ships sailed from Europe.

As the navigation portal Marinetraffic reported on the X network, citing an eyewitness, an LNG tanker BW Lesmes and an oil tanker Burri collided in the Suez Canal at night.

Vessels flying the flags of Singapore and the Cayman Islands were unable to disperse in the southern part of the channel. The information of the portal is confirmed by the AIS data of ships. By 0800 Moscow time, three tugs were pulling an LNG tanker into the Gulf of Suez, while Burri remained in place. Several tugs work with it.

Due to operations with Burri, another tanker Athens Spirit stopped at the ship.

It is curious that BW Lesmes and Burri went in the same direction – from Europe. The LNG tanker is from Spain and the oil tanker is from the Baltic Sea. And, obviously, hooked in the Suez Canal. The LNG tanker was empty, as it had previously delivered a cargo of liquefied gas from the American Freeport terminal to Spain. But the oil tanker, judging by the AIS data, is carrying oil or oil products from the Baltic port of Primorsk to Asia. Burri holds 115 thousand tons.
