At around 6 a.m., a truck caught fire between the Handelskai and the Prater junction for reasons unknown. The driver stopped the vehicle in one of the middle lanes and got to safety.
Column of smoke can be seen from afar
Already from a distance the alarmed forces of the professional fire brigade in Vienna saw a black column of smoke rising on the south-east bypass. The fire brigade had to catch up with a large tanker, reported fire brigade spokesman Christian Feiler. The towing vehicle, which was in full fire, was extinguished after around half an hour, the trailer loaded with bulk goods remained largely undamaged.
The burned-out truck was then lifted by the front wheels by a special tow truck from the fire brigade, towed from the motorway and parked securely. Nobody was injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is the subject of an investigation.
Drivers waited about an hour
The traffic was diverted during the extinguishing work at the Handelskai. The traffic jams reached back as far as Vienna’s north edge expressway (S2) near Hermann-Gebauer-Straße. A lane was also closed in the north direction, between Inzersdorf and Handelskai a loss of time was to be expected. There were also delays on the approach from the Donauuferautobahn (A22) to the Kaisermühlen junction.
