Tanel Kiik: the opposition will also prevent the reduction of family allowances in today’s session

On Tuesday, the opposition in the Riigikogu will continue to slow down the coalition’s roller-coaster policy in order to prevent the reduction of subsidies for wealthy families, confirms Tanel Kiik, the chairman of the Center Party faction.

“Monday’s session and the discussion of the Riigikogu’s Council of Elders proved that the coalition is not ready for any concessions in pushing through its policy. However, reducing the confidence of children and families during several simultaneous crises is unacceptable,” he says Tanel Kiik. “In difficult times, we need a reliable and well-thought-out population policy, which is why the government should completely abandon the plan to cut family allowances.”

According to Tanel Kiige, the opposition also jointly opposes the proposed tax increases, which are combined into one cluster bill, meaning that substantive discussion is excluded. “We do not agree with the fact that tax increases will primarily reduce the livelihood of the elderly, low-wage and middle-income people and leave more money in the hands of the wealthiest. Tax increases also worsen the competitiveness of Estonian companies on the international market,” criticizes Tanel Kiik.

“The bill to cut family allowances and the planned tax increases submitted to the Riigikogu must be withdrawn from the procedure, because the government parties have not asked for and received a mandate from the voters for such changes,” emphasizes Kiik.
