The mushrooms are currently springing up again in the Salzburg forests. Numerous hikers are on the “hunt”. Two kilograms per person per day are allowed, as most people know and the rules are anything but “vague”. We clarify.
Of the approx. 8,800 known mushroom species in Austria, only around 100 can be used for food. Many species are inedible or have no food value and some are even fatally poisonous for humans. HERE you will find tips.
There is a night ban when searching for mushrooms
In order not to disturb the animals in the forest, which are mainly busy eating at dawn and dusk, mushroom hunting times have also been introduced: in the summer months it is allowed between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. From October 1st this will be limited to 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. In individual areas protected by nature conservation law, such as natural forest reserves or special protection areas in the Hohe Tauern National Park, it is not permitted at all.
Fine of up to 14,000 euros
Around 500 voluntary members of the mountain and nature watch monitor compliance with these regulations laid down in the Salzburg Nature Conservation Act. These are specially trained, are allowed to stop collectors, record data, but also, for example, search through the backpack. If a mushroom seeker is caught weighing more than two kilos, all mushrooms will be confiscated. There is also a report, whereby a fine of up to 14,000 euros is possible.
Collect a permit for the mushroom
If you want to collect large quantities of mushrooms or sell them, you need the permission of the landowner and the nature conservation authority.
