There was cheering at Tampa’s sold out Amalie Arena to a capacity crowd of nearly 20,000 as Captain Steven Stamkos fired his Lightning to victory.
The 32-year-old Canadian scored to make it 1-0 in the 31st minute and only 21 seconds after Frank Vatrano equalized the Rangers on the power play with his ninth playoff goal of the season (54th).
That broke the Rangers’ resistance in Game 6 and the Lightning won a home game in the playoffs for the seventh straight year. Stamkos’ second goal also marks his new all-time high for playoff goals in a season.
“It’s hard to look back now what a special team we are. We still have a few games to play,” said Stamkos.
“We trust every player who swings over the rink, whether he scores a goal or not. It’s the little things that count, defending, the blocked shot, the sacrifices you make,” he said of the team performance the foreground.
The 1st final of the Stanley Cup 2022 will take place in Denver on Wednesday (2:00 a.m. CEST). This duel is the first in the playoffs between Tampa and Colorado.
