CHENNAI ∙ Tamil cinema has earned Rs 3,500 crore in 2023, when Malayalam cinema has plunged into losses. Revenue also includes sales of satellite, OTT, music, overseas and dubbing rights. In 2022, it was only Rs 2950 crore. 2023 is a record breaking year with 256 films released and 24 hits. 15 films were huge grossers. Out of 188 films with an investment of 4 to 5 crores, only 4 were successful. Some of these have collected more than 100 crores. 168 films caused loss to producers. In 2022, 25 films were released directly in OTT, while in 2023, it has reduced to 6. This time, the highest grossing foreign language film is Tamil super director Atlee’s ‘Jaawan’.

Rajinikanth’s ‘Jailer’ earned more than Rs 20 crore from Kerala. Vijay’s film Leo and Jigarthanda also collected well.
