Gianmarco Tamberi without errors at 2.37 with Qatari Barshim. Seven (out of 13) athletes remained in the race
An extraordinary Gianmarco Tamberi first at 2.37 with Qatari Barshim in the high jump final at the Tokyo Olympics. The 29-year-old from the Marche region – who had been waiting for this day for five years, since he was forced to attend the Rio Olympics with the ankle immobilized by the plaster knee-high – still without errors after 7 jumps, the only one with Barshim.

The race
A beard shade (no half-shave today), focused gaze, Tamberi starts off smoothly at an altitude of 2.19 e is repeated at 2.24. The next step a 2.27: passed well for Gimbo (who is satisfied), less well for pap Marco who makes a face a bit like this from the gallery. It rises to 2.30: Gimbo also overtakes this quota and only 5 (of the 10 finalists out of 13 remaining) have made it without errors. Barshim isn’t wrong here either, and neither is Korean Woo and Australian Starc. But Gimbo extraordinary: he touches the bar that dances and dances, but does not fall. Tamberi remains first with Barshim. In the race to aim for 2.37 there are thus seven left. Barshim and Nedasekau pass it, but Tamberi passes it too, with a wider margin than at 2.35. Now only 2 centimeters from his staff. Simply perfect. A 2.39 Barshim’s first mistake arrives.

The difficult approach
Gimbo after qualifying for the final at 2.28 had explained: I sucked. I didn’t like it, I’ll watch the videos with dad – he said after qualifying for the final – the approach to this race was terrible, as it measures the opposite of what I expected, I hope to find different confirmations soon but the goal was the final and I hit it.
