Tamaulipas authorities confirmed that an international traveler who arrived in the state on December 29 is infected with the B117 strain of COVID-19, which appeared for the first time in the United Kingdom.
Through a statement, the State Secretary of Health detailed that as part of the health security protocol, a 56-year-old man who arrived in Matamoros from Mexico City was identified, who tested positive for COVID-19 .

“According to the regulations, the federation was asked to process the sample in order to rule out the carriage of strains not known in the country. The result was positive for the new variant of SARS-CoV-2 ”, he indicated.
The head of Health in the state, Gloria Molina Gamboa, specified that the travelers and flight crew were immediately followed up, who tested negative for the processed samples.
Actions aimed at maintaining epidemiological surveillance and border control were also deployed through the State Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks.
Tamaulipas called for extreme preventive measures such as the use of face masks, frequent hand washing and staying home as long as possible “since it has been confirmed that the B117 mutation is more contagious than the original strain.”

According to the Federal Health Secretariat, the patient traveled from Amsterdam to Mexico City by air on December 28, 2020, and a day later he moved from the capital to Matamoros, Tamaulipas.
On December 29, he was transferred from the Matamoros airport to a hotel, following the biosafety protocol of the company where he works, and a PCR test was performed, which gave a positive result.
On January 2, 2021, the sample was sent to InDRE for sequencing.
Until then, the patient was asymptomatic, but on January 4 he had to go to a private hospital because he presented 84% oxygen saturation, and he was given outpatient treatment.
The man had to be hospitalized on January 8 and a day later he was intubated.
From the follow-up of the other passengers who traveled with the man from Mexico City to Matamoros, it was reported that 2 had symptoms of COVID but their PCR tests were negative, and 31 more were reported asymptomatic, Health reported in Press conference.
There are 12 passengers who have not been located to be informed of the corresponding measures.
Until this Sunday, 42 thousand 176 have been reported positive cases of COVID-19 in Tamaulipas, and 3,452 people have died from the disease.
