The President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaida and the President of Lithuania Gitan Nauseda also took part in the conversation.
The meeting was held to discuss current issues on the UN agenda – resolving international conflicts, climate change, opportunities for digital transformation and the potential risks of artificial intelligence.
Levits congratulated Guteres on his re-election as UN Secretary-General, appreciating his role in leading the UN’s current affairs and reform process. The President also informed about Latvia’s vision of the current issues of the UN Security Council and announced the state’s interest in applying for the status of a non-permanent member of the Council in 2026-2027.
The presidents of the three Baltic states discussed the role of the UN in resolving conflicts in Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova and Belarus with Gutherrez. The parties also discussed the urgent need for concrete action by the UN member states to respond to climate change.
In a conversation with the Presidents of the Baltic States, the UN Secretary General also paid great attention to the topic of potential risks posed by the development of artificial intelligence. Guteresre called for thinking broadly and strategically about how to maintain human leadership over the influence of artificial intelligence in various fields.
It has already been reported that the President will pay a working visit to the United States from 19 to 24 September to attend the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
