As the organizers remind, “2D Dance” is an experiment in which the art of dance is read in a screen format and how the works of our choreographers are perceived by authors who know little or nothing about Latvian dance. Reviews are complemented by online conversations with the authors of the articles and the choreographers of the works in question. The main goal of the project “2D Dance” is to preserve and activate communication between dance communities in different countries, developing the ability to talk about dance art, gaining a view from the side and promoting the recognition of Latvian artists.
Choreographer Jan Jacuk and Svetlana Ulanovskaya, a dance and ballet critic working in St. Petersburg and Minsk, a contemporary dance researcher, curator and lecturer will meet in an online conversation about the show “Everything will be fine” on March 31 at 7 p.m. The conversation will take place in Russian. The show “Everything will be fine” is a story about family and growth by choreographer Jan Jacuka. It begins with a vivid episode in childhood and leads through the fragile relationship between daughter and father. Review by Svetlana Ulanovskaya read here.
On April 1, at 7 pm, choreographer Klāvs Liepiņš and Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, choreographer, performer, researcher, pedagogue, chairman of the board of the Icelandic Choreographers’ Association will talk about the work “Grosombols”. The conversation will be in English. In the play “Grosombols”, choreographer Klāvs Liepiņš solves his personal search for masculinity, drawing attention to the need to re-evaluate the binary understanding of gender characteristics and encourage reflection on whether emotionality, tenderness, sensitivity correspond to only one of the sexes. Review by Katrina Gunnarsdotira read here.
The talks will take place on the “Zoom” platform and will be chaired by Inta Balode, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Dance Information Center. To participate, those interested are invited to write to e-mail [email protected]. Participants will receive a link to both the conversation and the show in question so that they can watch it before the event. There will be an opportunity to ask questions of interest to you.
Within the framework of the project, six reviews of foreign authors about Latvian dance performances have been published in the magazine “Dance.lv”, the reviews are supplemented by online conversations about each performance.
