Talking about Ukraine’s NATO membership is now inappropriate – candidate for Chancellor of Germany | Politics

Annalena Berbock, candidate for the position of Federal Chancellor of Germany from the Green Party, considers it inappropriate to talk now about Ukraine’s membership in NATO due to the conflict with Russia.

She said this in an interview with the German edition. Frankfurter Allgemeine… According to the politician, the most important thing now is to increase pressure on Russia in order to ensure compliance with the Minsk agreements.

“Stabilization is now a priority. One way or another, steps towards NATO membership are unrealistic in advance. And no matter how difficult it may be with regard to Russian actions, we must not end all negotiations with Moscow,” Berbock said.

At the same time, according to her, the Russian leadership needs to realize that sovereign states themselves decide the question of with whom to enter into union relations, and this, in particular, concerns the prospects Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO.

“But you cannot take the third step before the first, and, of course, not in a situation where there is a tough conflict with Russia. I think it makes sense to support Ukraine in demining,” the politician added.

Berbock also noted that the threat to Ukraine from Russia remains great.

“The most important thing is to ensure the implementation of the Minsk agreements now. The OSCE observer mission needs access to all parts of the Russian-occupied territory. It also desperately needs funds for aerial reconnaissance,” the candidate for the position of federal chancellor said.

As reported OBOZREVATEL:

  • head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Dmitry Kuleba said the Kremlin could resort to the outdated narrative of Russia as a “fortress under siege, surrounded by Ukraine and NATO.”
