Talitha Muusse closed her time On 1 prematurely because broadcaster KRO-NCRV set conditions that clashed with its personal and professional values. On closer inspection, Muusse could have made that decision earlier, she told the NPO Radio 1 program on Sunday the Perstribune.
The presenter was called back at the beginning of this month after calling on her followers on Twitter to come to The Hague to discuss, among other things, the debate about the ‘reconnaissance chaos’ and Omtzigt gate. The broadcaster no longer allowed her to participate in political conversations in the talk show.
Because that condition stood in the way of her “journalistic freedom”, Muusse decided not to present the last episode of the program. Since January she has formed a presentation duo with Sven Kockelmann on Sunday evenings.
Muusse calls the “leeway” that she adds On 1 got very limited. “So I could have concluded before: the room for maneuver here is so small, maybe I should decide myself to stop before a tweet or other incident leads to such a big confrontation,” she said on Sunday.
Muusse has started to think more about a journalistic profile
The “clash” made the presenter think more about the profile you should have as a journalist. “You have the classic school that says: you should avoid all friendships with politicians, you should not be a member of a political party as a journalist, you should try to be as neutral as possible outwardly,” she said. “From that perspective, I shouldn’t have sent that tweet.”
She does not know whether Muusse would resend the tweet. She has scrutinized the issue with journalists and people from politics, among others. “I find that big discussion – can you be an activist and also work in journalism? – itself more interesting to reflect on than the question ‘should you have sent that tweet or not?’.”
KRO-NCRV announced after the departure of Muusse that the departure took place in good consultation. The broadcaster also said that a new role is being discussed with the presenter.
