Who are the Taliban and ISIS?
The Taliban and ISIS are both extremist groups seeking to form an authoritarian state under their strict interpretation of Islamic Sharia law and are ready to use violence to achieve their goals.
What is the Difference Between ISIS and the Taliban?
Although ISIS and the Taliban are extremist militant groups, they differ in minor ways of religious interpretation and strategy. That fight had led to a bloody battle between the two. The most significant difference between ISIS and the Taliban is in their ideological interpretation and enforcement of Islamic Sharia law.
One of the aspects pointed out by experts, such as journalist Mah-Rukh Ali, is the group’s interpretation of how to treat women under their version of Islamic Syriac law. In a 2015 paper published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Ali highlighted that ISIS made women sexual objects in ways that the Taliban did not.
Jason Burke, foreign correspondent for The Guardian reported Al Arabiya, Tuesday (9/21/2021), noted that groups including the Taliban, which have shown greater pragmatism in recent years contrast sharply with them. “Like ISIS, which believes in unmitigated violence, extreme commitment against doctrinal purity and apocalyptic predictions,” he said.
