Deborah Lyons, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Afghanistan, called on countries around the world to channel aid funds to the poverty-stricken country.

He also called on countries around the world to give the Taliban who took over Afghanistan a chance to form a government and face a severe economic downturn.
“A modus vivendi must be found — and quickly — that will allow money to flow into Afghanistan to prevent a complete collapse of the economy and social fabric,” Lyons said at a UN Security Council meeting, as quoted by Reuters. AFP, Friday (10/9/2021).
“Otherwise, the result is a severe economic downturn that could plunge millions into poverty and hunger, could generate a huge influx of refugees from Afghanistan and indeed turn Afghanistan back from generation to generation,” he said.
He warned that the new Afghan government could not pay salaries and voiced concern over a storm of crises including a falling currency, sharp increases in food and fuel prices, and a lack of cash in private banks.

Foreign donors led by the United States provide more than 75 percent of public spending under Afghanistan’s 20-year Western-backed government — and quickly halted payments as the government collapsed last month amid a U.S. military pullout.
