He is widely regarded as Afghanistan’s next president. Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar flew from Qatar to Kandahar, the spiritual birthplace of the Taliban and the capital of Afghanistan when they ruled from 1996 to 2001.
Baradar was in prison in Pakistan from 2010 to 2018, when he was released at the request of the United States.

He led a Taliban delegation at talks in Doha, and signed a peace agreement with the US in February.

As Baradar’s plane landed, the US and Western allies resumed evacuation flights for diplomats and civilians from Kabul airport, a day after scenes of chaos when Afghans thronged the runway for safety.

About a dozen flights departed on Tuesday, although French Defense Minister Florence Parly said the Taliban roadblocks at the airport made access to the airport difficult.
