The supreme leader Taliban Hibatullah Akhundzada called for the world to stop telling them how to run Afghanistan. He insists that sharia law is the only model for a successful Islamic state.
Reported from the news agency AFPFriday (1/7/2022), Akhundzada spoke in front of a large gathering of scholars in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan on Friday (1/7). More than 3,000 clerics have gathered in Kabul since Thursday (30/6) for the three-day men-only gathering.
Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman and Deputy Minister of Information and Culture Taliban said the meeting aimed to address a number of complaints and other issues, although the agenda was not made public.
“Why does the world interfere in our business?” asked Akhundzada in an hour-long speech broadcast on state radio.
“They say ‘why don’t you do this, why don’t you do that?’ Why does the world interfere in our work?” he said.
Akhundzada rarely leaves Kandahar, the birthplace and spiritual heart of the Taliban. His arrival at the assembly hall was met with cheers and shouts, including “Long live the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan”, the Taliban’s name for the country.
No women attended the cleric’s meeting, but a Taliban source told AFP this week that thorny issues such as girls’ education would be discussed.
Akhundzada said the Taliban had given victory to Afghanistanbut it is up to the ulema to advise the new rulers on how to properly implement sharia law.
