Taliban Kills ISIS Commander in Afghanistan, Suspected of Planning Attacks

Kabul

Security forces Taliban killed a commander Islamic State (ISIS) in Afghanistan in the latest operation on Sunday (26/2) night. The ISIS commander who was killed was suspected of planning attacks on diplomatic missions in the capital Kabul.

As reported AFPTuesday (28/2/2023), violence in Afghanistan decreased dramatically after The Taliban took over last August 2021. However, in the past year, security has worsened with a series of attacks that have resulted in many fatalities and have been claimed by the ISIS affiliate in Afghanistan.

Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that Taliban forces killed Qari Fateh who was the “intelligence and operations chief” of the Afghanistan branch of ISIS. Fateh is said to have been killed in an operation by the Taliban forces on Sunday (26/2) evening local time.

“(Fateh) directly masterminded the recent operations in Kabul, including against diplomatic missions, mosques and other targets,” Mujahid said.

Another ISIS member, who was not named, was also killed in an operation targeting the radical militant cell in the Khair Khana area, Kabul.

Residents of the area reported loud gunshots on Sunday (26/2) evening local time. Taliban officials later posted video footage via Twitter showing two bodies lying amidst the rubble.

Security Council report United Nations (UN) in July 2022 named Fateh a key leader of ISIS, responsible for the military operations of the radical militant in a region spanning India, Iran and Central Asia.
