The Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) announced a three-day ceasefire in Afghanistan. The truce will begin on Sunday, May 24, during the festival Eid ul-Fitr (Uraza-bairam).
“The leadership instructs all Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate to take special measures to ensure the safety of compatriots,” said Zabihulla Mujahid, a spokesman for the movement (quoted by AFP). According to him, it was instructed “not to conduct offensive operations against the enemy anywhere.” Afghan President Ashraf Ghani welcomed the Taliban’s decision.
Recall, on February 29, the United States and the Taliban signed an agreement to begin the peace process in Afghanistan. A few days later, representatives of the Taliban announced the resumption of offensive operations against the security forces of Afghanistan.
Recently it became known about the attacks of militants at the funeral of a policeman in the province of Nangarhar and at the maternity hospital in Kabul, which is managed by the international organization Doctors Without Borders. The first attack killed 24 people, the second – 16. The Taliban denied involvement in both attacks.
