Taliban Flag Ceremony to Coincide 20 Years of the 9/11 Tragedy

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Taliban holding a flag ceremony at the Presidential Palace Afghanistan on Saturday (11/9), coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 tragedy in New York, United States.

As reported Associated Press, the flag ceremony was attended by interim officials of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Prime Minister Mohammad Hasan Akhund waved the Taliban flag at exactly 11:00 local time.

According to the Multimedia Head of the Taliban’s Cultural Commission, Ahmadullahh Muttaqi, the ceremony also marked the first day of the Taliban’s 33-member cabinet.

The ceremony comes two weeks after the United States returned all troops and their diplomatic mission from Afghanistan, marking the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan.

The Taliban first raised their flag at the Afghan presidential palace on Friday (10/9). They also painted their flag on the gate of the former US embassy building in the capital Kabul.

On the other hand, Americans commemorated the 20th anniversary of the September 11 tragedy with ceremonies at three locations, namely the monument to the former World Trade Center building in New York, the Ministry of Defense Building (Pentagon) and a field near the Shanksville, Pennsylvania area.

The Taliban are currently still struggling with resistance from their opposition group led by the former vice president of Afghanistan, Amrullah Saleh, in Panjshir Province.

Taliban militia reportedly shot and killed Saleh’s brother, Rohullah Azizi, while being stopped at a checkpoint in Panjshir. The driver was also killed by the Taliban.
