Taliban disrupt women’s protests in Kabul

The protesters said the Taliban attacked them with tear gas and pepper spray, denying them access to the presidential palace. The Taliban, for their part, claimed that the protests had gone out of control.

Judging by the protesters, one woman’s head shakes.

The protesters’ posters said, “We are not women in the 1990s!” It is a reference to the previous Taliban rule, that women in Afghanistan had to be severely restricted and the minor violations were severely punished.

In recent days, women have repeatedly taken to the streets in Kabul and Herat to protest. Women are demanding from the Taliban that women be given the right to work, study and be included in government.

The Taliban have stated that they will respect women’s rights, but according to their interpretation of Islamic law.

The Taliban have also announced that women will be able to hold government positions but not ministerial posts.
