Taliban Called Incessantly Searching For Citizens Who Help US

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Taliban is said to be actively looking for people who are helping US and NATO troops, even though they have promised not to take revenge. This was revealed in a secret UN document.

The document, provided by a UN threat assessment consultancy and seen by AFP, says the Taliban have a “priority list” of individuals seeking to be arrested.

According to the document, those most at risk are those with central roles in the Afghan military, police and intelligence.

The report also said the Taliban had carried out “targeted door-to-door visits” to individuals they wanted to arrest and their family members.

The document also included that the insurgents also carried out individual checks on access to Kabul Airport and set up checkpoints in a number of major cities, including in the capital and Jalalabad.

The document, dated Wednesday (18/8), was written by the Norwegian Center for Global Analyses, the organization that provides intelligence reports to UN agencies.

“They targeted the families of those who refused to surrender, and arrested and punished their families ‘according to Sharia law’,” the agency’s executive director, Christian Nellemann, told AFP.

“We suspect both individuals who previously worked with NATO/US troops and their allies, along with their family members, will be exposed for torture and execution.”

“This will further jeopardize western intelligence agencies, their networks, methods and capabilities to fight the Taliban, ISIS and other terrorist threats in the future,” he added.

The report said the Taliban militants were “quickly recruiting” new informants to cooperate with the new regime and expanding their list of targets by contacting mosques and money brokers.

The document also reprinted a letter dated August 16 from the Taliban to an individual working on counter-terrorism in the Afghan Government.

The letter asks the person to report to Taliban officials to “provide information about the nature of your work and relations with British and Americans.”

“If you do not report to the Committee, your family members will be arrested, and you are responsible for this. You and your family members will be subject to Sharia law,” the letter said.

The Norwegian Center for Global Analyses also warns that the Taliban could target or capture any remaining Westerners or foreign troops, including medical personnel, if they criticize the group.

AFP said the UN spokesman did not respond to requests for comment on the document.
