Taliban ask US to release frozen bank balances

The Taliban have asked the United States to release Afghanistan’s frozen assets. Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Chan Motaki told Afghan Bakhtar news agency.

Taliban representatives and senior US government officials met today for the first time since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. That conversation was in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

After the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, some 9 billion dollars (7.78 billion euros) in bank assets abroad were frozen. The Taliban now want to take that measure off the table, and they again asked for humanitarian aid in Doha.

According to Motaki, the Americans have promised help with the distribution of corona vaccines. Washington has not yet commented on the talks.

No recognition regime

Earlier, a US spokesperson said the talks should not be seen as recognition of the extremist regime. According to the spokesman, this can only happen if the Taliban show that they are a reliable interlocutor.

For the US, it was especially important to talk about the safe evacuation of US citizens, other foreigners and Afghans. In addition, Washington wanted to urge the Taliban not to make Afghanistan again a safe haven for terrorist organizations such as al-Qaida.
