UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres received a letter from the accredited Permanent Representative of Afghanistan, Ghulam Isakzai, with information about the Afghan delegation.
However, five days later, Guterres received a letter from the “Ministry of Foreign Affairs” of the so-called “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” signed by Amir Khan Muttaki, the newly elected “minister” of the Afghan Foreign Ministry.
In his address, Muttaki asked to take part in the meeting of UN world leaders, and also stated that Isakzai no longer represents Afghanistan, since Afghan leader Ashraf Ghani was “thrown off” and allegedly no longer “recognized as president” by other countries.
The Taliban have also nominated a new permanent representative to the UN, Suheil Shahin.
Both letters were sent to the members of the credentials committee of the 76th session of the General Assembly, no meetings of which have yet been scheduled.
