Taliban After Shooting Celebrates Victory, 17 Killed

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

At least 17 people died when members Taliban fired shots in the air to celebrate victory after claiming to have captured the only area Afghanistan unconquered, Pansjhir Valley.

News agency Shamshad and Tolo reported that a dozen people were killed when the Taliban fired “fire into the air” in Kabul. In addition, 41 other people were also injured in the incident.

Not only in Kabul, at least 14 other people were also injured because members of the Taliban in Nangarhar province opened fire in a similar celebration.

The Taliban’s main spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, also appealed to its members not to celebrate victory by firing into the air.

“Avoid firing shots in the air and just thank God. Bullets can injure civilians, so don’t shoot if you don’t need to,” Mujahid said as quoted by Antara. Reuters.

The Taliban are celebrating victory after the group claimed it had captured the only area in Afghanistan they had not conquered, the Panjshir Valley. However, anti-Taliban forces in Panjshir dispute these claims.

If the Taliban’s claims are proven, the group has managed to cover all areas of Afghanistan after fighting in recent months.

The Taliban themselves often fire into the air to celebrate victory. Shortly after the United States left Afghanistan earlier this week, the Taliban also opened fire on various roads.
