The Olimp / Venta 2002 team celebrated the victory of the Optibet Hockey League on Wednesday (OHL) in a regular championship game.

“Olimp” / ”Venta 2002” defeated the team of the Hockey School “Riga” 6: 0 (4: 0, 0: 0, 2: 0) as a homeowner in Pinki.

The goal of the Rigans in this match was guarded by Artūrs Šilovs, selected in the draft of the National Hockey League (NHL) last year, who will play for the “Rīgas” team while he cannot return to the Canadian Junior League. The first period was unsuccessful for him, because the guests were defeated by Georgy Pujacs, Edijs Brahmanis, Krists Apsītis and Kirils Galoha, only Apsītis scored in the same line-up.

In the second period, both teams remained “at zero”, but in the third leg of the game, Galoha and Aleksandrs Jerofejevs threw the goal at the Riga goal. Brahmanis closed the match with three points (1 + 2), but Nikolay Yeliseev, who had two assists, also gave his help.

The home goalkeeper Rūdolfs Gusts Lazdiņš fought off all ten picks thrown by the opponents, but Šilov had to deal with 58 shots.

Leading the tournament table with 11 points in seven duels “Olimp” / “Venta 2002”, the second place with ten points in six battles is for “Zemgale” / LLU team, but “Mogo” / LSPA and “Liepāja” also have the same points in seven duels. Next, in eight games, five points are for the Hockey School “Riga” and three – for “Prizmai” / IHS, while Daugavpils “Dinaburga” has been left in four matches.

In the 2020/2021 season, OHL plays “Mogo” / LSPA, “Olimp” / ”Venta 2002”, “Zemgale” / LLU, Hockey school “Riga”, Daugavpils “Dinaburga”, “Prizma” / IHS and “Liepājas” teams.

Last season, eight teams played in the Latvian Super League, but in the 2020/21 season there will be one team less, because “Kurbads” will not play in the tournament.

Last season, the playoffs were not played, but the winner of the local championship was declared “Olimp”. The newcomer to the tournament won the decisive points after “Riga” did not come to the last match of the season with the “Kurbads” team.

With its success, the Olimp earned the OHL the opportunity to compete in the Continental Cup organized by the International Hockey Federation (IIHF), but the international competition was canceled.
