Taking off the two hundred-year-old dust from the notes, I think not to get plague

On July 17 and 18, the VI Music and Art Festival of the Duchess of Kurzeme-Zemgale Kettler “Vivat Curlandia!” Will take place in Bauska. “For the sixth year in a row, we will turn Bauska into a place where you will be able to see, hear and feel the everyday life of medieval, renaissance and early baroque people, enjoying a glorious early music festival,” says Maris Kupčs, the author of the festival’s idea.

The culmination of the festival promises to be the performance of the Italian composer Antonio Sartorio’s opera “Orpheus” (1672), which can be enjoyed by candlelight at the Bauska Culture Center, and outstanding artists who will be dressed in special costumes will take part in the opera performance. “It will be a real journey in a time machine, because such events are very rare in Europe,” adds the conductor.

What is the most extreme thing you have ever done in your life?
I’m a completely boring type, and I don’t have time for extreme things, because I keep some archives all the time. If only this is an opportunity to breathe in the two-hundred-year-old dust that is torn from the notes, at the same time I think I will not get the plague…

One of the most touching moments in life…
There are personal things I won’t talk about. Speaking of professional things, that was when, after 35 years of longing, we finally got a copy of Mozart’s piano. Now this instrument is in the Academy of Music, in my department, and we play concerts on it very successfully.

What inspires you to work?
For me, one job constantly overlaps with another, and these works also inspire me, because they have to be completed somehow.

What are your healthy habits?
Outside of red wine, it is cycling and physical work in my country house.

What are your bad habits?
I am a general, active and confident enjoyer of life!

What is the most valuable lesson learned of a lifetime?
Everything is going exactly as intended, and unfortunately everything is happening a little slower than we want. But it happens

A book or movie that you would recommend to others to see / read.
There are an awful lot of books, apart from the special literature read by me and nine dozen of my friends. But from normal human viewing, I just discovered the Netflix Blacklist. The last series I saw took place in Latvia, and it was such an American tribute to Rundāle Castle and Latvia that I was absolutely thrilled! The main character said that Rundāle makes Versailles ashamed… I didn’t expect anything like that, because the series itself is about the FBI, which has very masterful scripts and acting.

What music do you listen to?
No! Outside of making music, I listen to silence. Especially because I need fields, silence and bird songs.

A popular place to dine (unless there is an emergency).
Most often I and my colleagues can be found either in “Double Coffe” on Kaļķu Street, which is directly opposite our studio, or in the grill bar “Cock & Bull”. They no longer ask what we want to order, because they already know it.

The place and time where you would like to live.
Absolutely now! In any case, such opportunities are only now, and, of course, they will be even better. Now I feel fantastic because I can travel to the past and enjoy any artifacts from the past and get in a virtual way – unlike the past when I travel physically and share archives. Now I can get it right away on my computer, outdoors, fishing or working in the garden.
