Taken the “gang of Georgians”: thefts in homes in Milan with the “transparent sheet”

A little thin clear plastic piece like a sheet of paper, often taken by cutting out an empty water bottle a little larger than a centimeter. He was coming placed in the gap between the jamb and the door of the apartment so as to be almost invisible to the home owner. Then the gang waited two or three days and went back to check: if the plastic sheet was still in place it meant that no one had opened the door in the previous hours and therefore the owners were probably on vacation. Otherwise, the objective was changed, without too many problems. Perhaps aiming for another apartment in the building since when one of the “signalers” managed to enter a building, all the lodgings were marked in a sort of trawling.

This was the method most used by gang of Georgian thieves arrested by the investigators of the Second section of the Milan Mobile team. A detention order was issued against seven Georgians signed by prosecutor Francesca Crupi and by the deputy prosecutor, Laura Pedio. An eighth man, an Egyptian fence who lived in the Viale Monza area, was instead arrested on the initiative by the police. In his apartment, money and jewelry were found, in particular hidden inside the freezer, coming from several home thefts.

Episodes on which investigators are now focusing. Five episodes are contested in the arrest order. The first dates back to the period between 23 and 30 July (the owners were on vacation and only noticed it upon returning) in an apartment in viale Teodorico, in Fiera, the second between 10 and 11 September in via Mac Mahon, the third (only attempted) on 19 September in via Filippino Lippi, in Città Studi. Two other thefts were carried out in Solaro (between 20 and 21 September) and in Pregnana Milanese (23 September). In total between 20 and 30 thousand euros of loot. The gang was moving rapidly on the territory and according to the latest investigations – for this reason it was decided to adopt the arrest measure – it was organizing to return to Georgia and France, from where some members of the group came.

What framed them was the analysis of a footprint found during the forensic inspection after a hit. One of the arrested, in fact, had already been captured and convicted of theft in 2012 and therefore his involvement in the most recent cases immediately emerged. The policemen, directed by Marco Calì and Vittorio La Torre, then managed to isolate the various accomplices thanks to the analysis of telephone traffic. Then the investigators went back to some rental cars used by the gang (two moved mainly by bike) and began the shadowing. In some cases, also thanks to the simple passage of a “steering wheel” in the street, the agents managed to avoid new hits during the investigation. The organization (even if the crime of conspiracy is not disputed) almost certainly had solid roots in Georgia, as the thieves were ready to return to be replaced by other affiliates. But the speed of the investigation and the need to stop their raids (there are dozens of cases on which investigations are underway) did not allow for further investigations on the “second level” at this stage.

Thieves often struck at night, in the evening or in the late afternoon during the summer when the buildings are sparsely populated. Favorite places include the Center and the Sempione-Fiera area. The doors were opened with the use of so-called “Bulgarian keys”, tools that make it possible to reconstruct the profile of the locks (even with “double bit”) and to open any type of door, even armored. However, the gang mainly hit in apartments where there were no advanced security systems (such as cameras and controls with sensors) or latest generation locks. In this case the target was “missed” and the trawling continued elsewhere. During the investigations, the policemen also traced back to the Egyptian who had the task of receiving the goods. During the searches in his apartment in Viale Monza, hundreds of jewels and precious objects (but also PCs and phones) came up and soon all this material will be published on the site of the police headquarters in an attempt to trace the owners and trace the thefts committed in recent months.
