Now that the corona virus is getting really close for many people, it is time to pull out all the stops. Taking vitamin D would reduce the risk of getting infected. If the virus does get to you, the chance may be smaller that you will become very ill. That’s what professors of immunology, scientists and doctors say in the AD.
“Why on earth wouldn’t you take vitamin D?” Huub Savelkoul, professor of immunology at Wageningen University, told the news site. “There are so many Clues in the scientific literature that vitamin D helps against corona. ”
Al longer is known that the ‘sunshine vitamin’ helps against respiratory infections, but there are now too strong clues that a daily vitamin pill can lead to a less serious corona infection. “So I recommend everyone to take vitamin D.”
Not enough sun
Due to a lack of sunlight, a third to half of the Dutch have a vitamin D deficiency in the winter. Overweight people have to be extra careful, because the vitamin is lost in the fat tissue. People with a dark skin color are also more likely to have a deficiency, because dark skin absorbs the vitamin less well.
Still, there is not much evidence that vitamin D offers major benefits in the fight against corona. There is one Spanish study which demonstrates the effect so far. In addition, fifty corona patients received a high dose of vitamin D. One of them ended up in IC, none died. Of a control group of 26 people with corona, who therefore did not receive the vitamin, two people died and thirteen ended up on the IC. “This is the first formal evidence that vitamin D makes Covid less serious,” said Savelkoul, who says the group studied is small.
The immunologists, who questioned AD, take 20 or 30 micrograms of the vitamin themselves every day. “In the winter months our vitamin D level drops anyway and now we are inside even more due to the partial lockdown, so the shortage is even worse,” says internist-endocrinologist Renate de Jongh of the Amsterdam UMC. “A small amount does not hurt and is cheapso why not. ”
