Jakarta –
The super luxury sailing ship owned by Jeff Bezos, which has an estimated value of IDR 7.5 trillion, has finally started going to sea. This magnificent 127 meter long ship has been a controversy even since it was still being built.
The ship named ‘Koru’ is predicted as a cruise ship with the biggest sail in the world. This ship is the product of Oceano, which specializes in building large custom cruise ships.
The name Koru that Jeff Bezos chose was taken from the language and symbol of the Maori tribe which is depicted as an unfolding fern leaf. Quoted from the New Zealand government website, the Koru is a symbol that represents eternal motion that continuously repeats, and the circle that moves inward indicates the return of life to its point of origin.
Jeff Bezos Sailboat Interior
This ship owned by the boss of Amazon has a steel hull with an internal volume of 3,300 GT (Gross Tonnage). Overall, the ship will be powered by kinetic energy generated by three giant sails 70 meters high.
However, like most sailing cruise ships, the Koru will also be equipped with MTU engines. Koru is estimated to be able to cross the ocean at a speed of about 20 knots or 37 km/hour.
Quoted from Boatsafe, Koru has an interior and design similar to the famous sailing ship Black Pearl. It’s just that, not much information is available regarding the innards and interiors of the two luxury sailing ships.
It is said that Koru will be able to cross the ocean without using a drop of fuel. This is possible because the ship’s three masts have a revolutionary design to harness wind power to propel the ship.
Not only that, Koru can even convert the wind power obtained into electrical energy, which is then used to turn on the various luxurious facilities of the yacht.
Speaking of capacity and capacity, the ship can accommodate up to 18 guests, with a crew of around 40 people.
This sailing ship consists of three floors, one of which has a swimming pool.
The Jeff Bezos Sailing Controversy
In its journey, this ship has reaped a lot of controversy even since it was still in the process of being built, especially for the people of Rotterdam, Netherlands. This is due to the planned demolition of the Koningshaven Bridge, which is one of the historic bridges in the city.
The plan to dismantle this bridge is necessary so that the super luxury cruise ship can pass it. This made around 3,000 Dutch people angry and intended to throw eggs at the cruise ship.
However, the Dutch people who were already angry had to give up their intention because in the end Oceanco as the cruise ship maker’s request to dismantle the Koningshaven Bridge was rejected by the city government of Rotterdam. This problem was finally solved by moving ship production to a different shipyard.
