The film reveals true and interesting facts about the Riga Dome Cathedral, as well as its unique and ancient organ, which is hard to find in Europe. Viewers will learn an exciting story about the history of the instrument, the church’s ambition to build the world’s largest and most modern organ at the time, and the masters and professions without which the organ would not be possible in the 17th century or today.
“The film is about how we get to know what we think we know,” said one of its creators, Elijah Godins, the dean of the Riga Dome Cathedral, at the premiere of the film.
The idea to make a film about the organ of the Riga Dome Cathedral was prompted by research carried out for the needs of restoration, as well as during the pandemic, which stopped the activity in the church due to restrictions.
The premiere of the film will take place on April 17 on the channel LTV1, and it is already included in the program “Latvian School Bag”, as it allows students of schools that study far from the capital to look into the Riga Dome Cathedral. The film is complemented by specially prepared digital teaching materials that allow teachers to dedicate an entire lesson to the topic. The primary audience for the film is 8-11. class students.
The film “Secrets of the Riga Dome Organ” is directed by Žaklīne Zābere-Gāga, co-authors – Dean of the Riga Dome Elija Godiņš, Riga Dome Music head of department and organist Aigars Reinis, Head of the Riga Dome Restoration Department Ronalds Lūsis, Riga Dome organ masters Viesturs Ilsums and Mikus Dzenītis, Riga Dome restorer and archivist Lana Pelse. Film operator – Jānis Šēnbergs, editing operator – Jānis Orbidāns, drone operator – Ēriks Božis.
