Take a look at the sewers below Prague, where the oldest part of the sewer is being repaired

The brick sewer in Řásnovka Street in the center of Prague has been reconstructed. A 70-meter sewer has been used for drainage of rainwater and rainwater for 120 years. “This water supply line is one of the oldest historical parts of the sewerage network under construction in Prague,” Miroslav Volf, director of Čermák a Hrachovec, which is in charge of repairs, told Novinká.

The original brick sewer was built of brick, but the builders decided to use a more durable material for the new pipes. It is made entirely of egg-shaped basalt tubes. This unique material was used for the first time in the Czech Republic. “We are testing this reconstructed section as a pilot project to test the material,” Volf explained.

Molten basalt, from which the profiles are made, is unique especially in its durability. “It is completely non-absorbent, abrasion-resistant and also resistant to all chemical substances,” Miloš Hrachovec, the company’s co-founder, described to Novinka, adding that it is basically an indestructible material.

Director Volf also counts on a long service life. “When carrying out the global construction of the sewer, we think it should last a hundred years or more,” he added.

It is being reconstructed by the so-called rebuilding of the existing sewer. “First, the entrance shaft is made, then a blast is set off on both sides, which forces and breaks through the original sewer,” explained Miroslav Volf. The segments consisting of a fully basalt egg pipe, which will form a new drain, will then be newly connected to the executed profile.

The repairs were preceded in 2018 by a survey which found significant failures. In particular, the looking piece of building material, cracks in the top of the vault and the absence of the lower groove.

Prague’s water supply and sewerage systems, which are in charge of water distribution in the capital, will pay at least 25 million crowns for the entire reconstruction.
