Jakarta –
Honda Motor Co. Ltd. said on Saturday (3/10/2020) that they have confirmed the 17th death in the US from a faulty Takata airbag inflator. The Japanese manufacturer has conducted an inspection with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Confirmed, on August 20, 2020 airbag Takata has lost the life of the driver of a 2002 Honda Civic. The driver who died was not the registered owner of the Honda Civic. Honda was also unable to confirm whether the driver was aware that the car’s airbags had not been repaired.
Honda said the 2002 Civic had been recalled since December 2011 for the replacement of the driver’s front airbag inflator. Meanwhile in 2014 a recall was carried out for airbags in front of the passengers.
Honda also sent more than 15 withdrawal notices by post over the past eight years to the vehicle’s registered owners prior to the accident. Apart from letters, Honda also made various efforts to contact vehicle owners.
Defective Takata airbags cause metal shards when active. This victim is the 17th in the US since it was first discovered in 2009. Takata airbags caused the death of 15 Honda cars and 2 in Ford cars.
In total, Takata airbags have claimed 26 lives globally. In addition, 290 people were injured.
Takata airbag recall covers about 100 million units in 19 major car brands worldwide. Of the 100 million units, 63 million Takata airbag inflators are in the US.
In August, Honda agreed to pay $ 85 million to complete a large-state investigation into the use of a faulty Takata inflator.
