“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine marks the end of the post-Cold War era; “We are in a time of historical inflection,” says Takahiro NAKAMAE, Japanese ambassador to Spain, at the University of Navarra.

“Since the end of the Cold War and during the last 30 years we have lived in a time of certain optimism, where globalization has consolidated prosperity and peace. However, we are at a moment of historical inflection, marked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the change in the balance of power, with the emergence of countries with increasing strength to pursue their interests. Takahiro NAKAMAE, Japanese ambassador to Spain, gave a conference at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra, within the framework of the Thomas More Day for the Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE).

In his speech, the diplomat offered an overview of the Japanese country’s foreign policy and explained how the geopolitical situation, which defines the national security environment, has changed.

In this situation, he has indicated that his country’s intention with China is to build stable and constructive relations: “China is Japan’s first trading partner, the economic interdependence of both countries is enormous, and Japan and China share great responsibilities. “Japan’s policy is to continue dialogue, urge China to act in accordance with its responsibility, and cooperate to address common global challenges.”

He has also stressed the importance that his country’s alliance with the United States has for its national security and regional stability. “We want to continue strengthening our alliance with the United States and extend Japan’s cooperation with like-minded countries, such as South Korea, Australia or India.”

Spain – Japan, a relationship of more than four centuries

Regarding Spain and its relations with the Country of the rising sun, the Japanese ambassador has indicated that they are “strategic partners, committed to solving different international challenges together.” The bond between Japan and Spain dates back more than 400 years, which makes us one of the European countries with which Japan has the longest relationship. Finally, the ambassador has expressed that his intention is to “intensify ties around three axes: security, economy and civil society.”
