Farnesina –
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Antonio Tajani, spoke today at the IV Global Conference on the Sustainable Development Goal SDG16, opening the plenary session “Promoting participatory decision-making to accelerate transformative action: food systems and climate change” dedicated to the two great challenges of our time – food security and climate change – and the best governance practices implemented to address them. The session was also attended by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu and WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain.
“Global food insecurity has reached unprecedented levels – said Minister Tajani – with the climate crisis as one of the main causes. We have unfortunately seen it in Emilia-Romagna, recently devastated by devastating floods, which came after a long and dramatic drought. Climate change is today an extremely concrete problem, with implications for national and global security. Structural transformations and international coordination are needed to leave no one behind. With its strategic position in the center of the Mediterranean, Italy aspires to increasingly be a bridge between the North and South of the world, also thanks to the fundamental contribution of our agro-food chain in support of our partner countries, starting from those of the Mediterranean. The Government – added Minister Tajani – is committed to promoting issues related to food insecurity on the international agenda, starting with the second UN Summit on Agri-food Systems that Italy will host in Rome at the FAO next July and the Italian Presidency of the G7 in 2024”.
