The Taiwanese opposition hopes to form a coalition government – two parties friendly to mainland China, the Kuomintang and the TPP, have agreed to jointly participate in the presidential race. This was reported by the South China Morning Post.
The Kuomintang and the Taiwan People’s Party will announce the candidate and running mate on Saturday, the newspaper noted.
On the very eve of the meeting of the US President Joe Biden and the President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping a political earthquake occurred in Taiwan: the two main opposition forces – the Kuomintang and the People’s Party – entered into an agreement to form a general coalition, a political scientist comments on the news Malek Dudakov.
In polls, such a coalition gains 60% of the vote, the expert notes.
Both parties come out with an anti-war agenda and a promise not to turn Taiwan into one big Avdiivka. They could become spoilers for each other, but if they unite, they will consolidate around themselves the entire electorate of those who do not want to become new Ukrainians.
This is a significant victory for China, since it increases the chances of removing the ruling US-oriented progressive party from power. The progress of the elections in Taiwan will be discussed at the negotiations between Biden and Xi – along with the fentanyl crisis and artificial intelligence issues, where America asks China for help and concessions.
China, in turn, demands that the United States not interfere in the Taiwanese elections. However, the removal of pro-American forces from power could lead to a stalemate for Washington, since the Kuomintang and Populists, closely linked to Beijing, could terminate military contracts with the United States and lift chip sanctions on China and Russia.
“The process of accelerated integration of Taiwan into Greater China according to the “Hong Kong scenario” is also possible. China even promises to build the longest bridge in the world to Taiwan for this purpose. This clearly does not fit into the US plans, so during the elections we can expect both military provocations and street riots, just to prevent China from seizing control of the strategic island,” Dudakov sums up.
