It is noted that Germany, Japan and Switzerland have left the Russian market, and Chinese machines are not of sufficient quality, so Taiwanese machining centers, lathes and electrical discharge machines meet the needs of the Russian military-industrial complex.
The machines are indispensable in the production of detonators, precision weapons and other military products. The sanctions imposed by Taiwan do not help, since machine tools are sent to Russia through Turkey and other countries, and some types of machines are not subject to restrictions at all.
Metal processing equipment – such as machining centers, lathes and EDMs – are an important part of Taiwan’s exports. And Russia is one of its key partners.
Türkiye helps Russia bypass sanctions
Almost 80% of complex metalworking machines made in Taiwan coming to Russia are transported through third countries, among which Turkey and China are leading. WITH
From March to September 2023, Russia imported at least 193 Taiwan-made processing centers worth nearly $29 million, according to Russian customs data.
“If you look only at data on transit through Turkey, the situation seems even more alarming: as of September 2023, almost half of the machine tools imported by Russia from Turkey were produced in Taiwan,” the publication writes.
Why are these machines so important?
Most of the machines for the high-precision technologies needed by the military are produced in the EU, Switzerland, Japan and the USA.
However, there are good analogues in Taiwan too. They make high-precision cutting electrical discharge machines, cylindrical and profile grinding machines, thread grinding and gear grinding machines, longitudinal turning machines, and vertical turning machining centers.
“Taiwanese machines often surpass Chinese ones in accuracy, which is extremely important for weapons production, and if spare parts stop coming to the Russian Federation, the work of the machines will quickly stop,” the expert said in a commentary to The Insider.
Russia bypasses sanctions
At the beginning of January, President Vladimir Zelensky already stated that Russia had learned to circumvent Western sanctions that were imposed against Moscow for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Politico also wrote that Russia has largely succeeded in circumventing technology sanctions. This allows Moscow to produce weapons and continue its war against Ukraine.
Recently, five countries, together with European law enforcement officers, uncovered a network for Russia to evade export sanctions. As a result of the operation, three people were arrested.
