Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, clarified his statement regarding ‘independent’ Taiwan and said the US position had not changed on China’s sovereignty.
However, Biden’s statement about ‘independent’ Taiwan is still considered ambiguous.
The series of statements about Taiwan came after a virtual meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday (16/11).
When asked about the development of the Taiwan issue, Biden reaffirmed his position and support for US law on Taiwan or what is commonly called Taiwan Law.
Under Taiwan Law, the United States does not recognize Taiwan’s independence, but they are committed to helping the island maintain its sovereignty.
“It’s independence. It’s a self-made decision,” Biden told reporters during a visit to New Hampshire AFP, Wednesday (17/11).
The White House did not respond to requests for clarification on where Biden’s statement was referring.
Biden only said briefly after he had no intention of changing the direction of US policy towards Taiwan.
“We are not going to change our policies. We are not pushing for independence,” Biden said.
He said the US was only pushing the island as per Taiwan law.
“That’s what we do. Let them make the decision,” he continued.
This is the third time that Biden has gone against US policy. The attitude of the president of Uncle Sam’s country gives the impression of support for Taiwan.
Last October, Biden showed his support when asked about the US whether to come to Taiwan to fight China.
“Yes, we have a commitment,” said Biden.
In the previous month, Biden also stated the same thing. Shortly thereafter, however, the White House clarified that the United States had not changed.
