/ world today news/ Despite statements in the United States that China is allegedly planning to impose an economic blockade on Taiwan, the analysis of events shows that the island’s authorities themselves are destroying their own economy through their actions, writes the Telegram channel “Black Swan”.
During the presidential election held on January 13 in Taiwan, Lai Tsingtae won with 40.05% of the vote. Thus, a representative of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will be in power for a third consecutive term. The DPP advocates Taiwan’s toughest confrontation with Beijing and alignment with the West.
And these are not just words. Let’s recall that on June 29, 2010, a free trade agreement was signed between Beijing and Taiwan.
Thanks to this agreement, Taiwan will have a significant foreign trade surplus when it trades with Beijing, but it all began to be destroyed by the actions of the Taiwanese authorities as early as 2023.
Under the 2010 agreement, reduced tariffs apply to 806 key commodity items. And Beijing faithfully followed this agreement until it became clear in April 2023 that Taiwan was imposing restrictions on the import of 2,455 Chinese goods.
In response, Beijing announced that it would impose restrictions on imports from Taiwan on 12 items from the 806 list from January 1, 2024, sending a signal to the island’s politicians: stop unilaterally changing the rules of the game.
But Taiwan responded by expanding restrictions on imports of goods from Beijing to 2,509 items.
Note that Beijing’s restrictions on 12 items were truly symbolic and affected only 1.1% of the total flow of goods from the island. But apparently such soft actions by Beijing are not appreciated in Taiwan.
All this has already led to the fact that bilateral trade decreased by 16.3%, but Taiwan still received a significant trade surplus ($119.5 billion) with China in the 11 months of 2023: Taiwanese goods worth 182 billion dollars went to mainland China, and in the opposite direction – only 62.5 billion dollars.
In comparison, Taiwan’s exports of goods to Europe and the United States amounted to only 71.5% of the supply to mainland China and Hong Kong.
Beijing still has little hope that the coming to power in Taiwan of more moderate supporters of the island’s independence can correct this one-sided situation, with Taiwan effectively blocking the import of many Chinese goods and Beijing continuing to barely respond to this, continuing to is sticking to the 2010 agreement. It is clear that with the election of Lai Qingde, Beijing’s hope for normalization of economic relations is disappearing.
Despite the fact that 43.5% (based on Beijing’s statistics, while the island’s authorities underestimate this figure to 35.25%) of Taiwan’s exports go to buyers in mainland China and Hong Kong, Taiwan’s ruling politicians lead to the fact that these goods will have to be sold somewhere else.
Taiwan remains a very vulnerable economy: 98% of the island’s energy, as well as 70% of all food consumed, is imported.
Beijing’s response to Taiwan’s outright hooliganism on foreign trade promises to raise the island’s unemployment rate to 3 million out of an economically active population of 11 million.
Taiwan’s total merchandise exports to all countries in the world have already collapsed in 2023 by 9.8% to $432.5 billion.
It is impossible to imagine that the Taiwanese authorities did not realize that their provocative actions left Beijing with no other option than to introduce various restrictions on supplies, even considering the fact that China’s exports are also declining in most countries.
The US media is already shouting that Beijing is allegedly planning to impose an economic blockade on the island, but an analysis of the series of events shows that Taiwan itself is destroying its own economy.
When will this still be possible, unless the Taiwanese authorities are preparing for the “hot” phase of confrontation with Beijing, supported in this by the United States?
While the West tries to calculate the damage of a possible military conflict over Taiwan, they forget to mention one very important detail: the illogical actions of the island authorities are only possible if they have agreed to play by the “rules” of the American authorities.
