The World Baseball classic (WBC) qualifiers are set to kick off in February 2025, and the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) recently held a meeting to finalize the 35-man roster for the Taiwan team. Head coach Zeng Haoju revealed that the lineup for the qualifiers will feature a largely new group of players, with only one familiar face from the previous World Top 12 Baseball Championship.
The WBC qualifiers will feature eight teams divided into two groups. Taiwan, as the host, will compete alongside South Africa, Nicaragua, and Spain from February 21 to 25, 2025. The group stage will be a round-robin format, with the top team advancing directly to the main tournament. The second and third-place teams will face off in a decisive match on the final day to secure the last spot.
While the final 28-player roster has yet to be announced, Zeng haoju confirmed that the team for the qualifiers will differ significantly from the World Top 12 lineup. “We are planning to field a new group of players for the qualifiers,” he said. “The players from the Top 12 tournament have had a long season and need more rest.”
“Currently,it is planned to consist of another group of players to compete in the qualifying tournament, because the top 12 players have reached the top 12 from the beginning of this year, and the shutdown is relatively late.”
Zeng Haoju, Taiwan Team Head Coach
The only player from the World Top 12 squad to make the qualifiers roster is Chen Jiexian, the team’s captain and Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the conference. Zeng Haoju praised Chen’s performance and aspirations, stating, “We have asked him, and he has very high aspirations. Everyone saw his performance during the Top 12, and he was crucial to our success. We hope he can carry that momentum into the qualifiers and help us advance to the main tournament.”
The new lineup aims to expand the talent pool for the Taiwan team and build a stronger national squad for future competitions. The 35-man roster includes 20 pitchers, 3 catchers, 7 infielders, and 5 outfielders, with approximately 12 to 13 foreign players. The coaching staff remains consistent with the World Top 12 team, featuring pitching coaches Lin Yueping and Wang Jianmin, as well as hitting coaches Peng Zhengmin and Gao Guohui.
As the qualifiers approach, the Taiwan team is focused on preparing a fresh roster to compete on the international stage. With high hopes and a blend of experience and new talent, the squad aims to secure a spot in the prestigious World Baseball Classic.
