Taiwan Urges Vulnerable People to Avoid Travel to Mainland China Amid Pneumonia Outbreak – Latest Updates

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Taiwan urges children, the elderly and patients with compromised immune systems not to travel to mainland China amid a mysterious pneumonia outbreak in the country.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Health told vulnerable people “not to travel to China, unless necessary,” in a statement on November 30, 2023, quoted from Daily Mail, Saturday (2/12/2023). Hours earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi insisted that authorities had “controlled the situation effectively.”

The sight of hazardous workers spraying disinfectant all over schools and roads, as well as images of crowds of people wearing masks in hospitals, are considered similar to the early days of COVID-19. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) claims they have data showing that the outbreak in China is caused by a common respiratory disease, not a new pathogen.

Nevertheless, Taiwan continues to urge its citizens not to travel not only to mainland China, but also Hong Kong and Macau, unless necessary. It said that if travel to China is unavoidable, people should be vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 before travelling.

Chinese and WHO officials insist that the surge is caused by flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a bacterial infection that causes pneumonia. China is said to be one of the countries implementing it lockdown the longest and strictest during the pandemic.

This is thought to have robbed people, especially children, of vital immunity against seasonal diseases. Wang said on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, that the increase in respiratory diseases in China is a common problem facing all countries.
