Taiwan unveiled its first self-developed submarine today (28th).
On this day, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen unveiled the Haikun submarine, the first of a total of eight new submarine construction projects that began upon her inauguration in 2016.
At a public event held at a factory in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, President Tsai said, “In the past, domestic development of submarines was considered impossible, but today, submarines designed and manufactured by our people are before our eyes.”
President Tsai said that the Haikun will play an important role in strengthening the Taiwan Navy’s asymmetric warfare capabilities, and emphasized that Taiwan’s independent defense policy must continue.
The Taiwanese company that led the construction of the submarine said that about 40% of the Haikun used parts manufactured domestically in Taiwan.
`Reuters’ news agency reported that while China claims Taiwan as its territory and continues military activities near the island almost every day, Taiwan has considered this submarine program as the core of its military modernization plan.
The Haikun, which is scheduled to begin its mission in 2025, has a price of about $1.53 billion per unit and is known to be equipped with a combat system made by Lockheed Martin and American Mark-48 heavy torpedoes.
