Taiwan’s presidential election, which will be held on January 13th next year, will be a three-way race between pro-US, pro-China and neutral parties.
First, candidate Lai Ching-de, chairman of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and vice-president of Taiwan.
He made his colors clear by selecting Xiao Mei-qin, a representative pro-American and anti-China activist, as his running mate.

Kuomintang candidate Hou Yui, who is Taiwan’s youngest police chief, is pro-Beijing.
There are even rumors that it was selected after former President Ma Ying-jeou’s visit to China last March.
[허우유이 / 국민당 후보 : (민진당은) 전쟁을 준비한다면서 끊임없이 도발하고 있습니다. 심지어 타이완 독립을 이용해 전쟁을 유도하는 것 아닙니까?]
Like Lai Ching-de, Ku Wen-je of the People’s Party entered politics after being elected mayor of Taipei in 2014.
They argue that the two major political parties are biased toward the United States and China, respectively, and that a balance should be pursued.
[커원저 / 민중당 후보 : 완전한 분리는 불가능합니다. 양안 사이에 지금처럼 전혀 왕래나 대화가 없는 건 옳지 못합니다.]
According to an approval rating survey released a month before the presidential election, first place Lai Qingde (35.1%) is in decline, while second place Hou Yuyi (32.5%) is closely following.
On the other hand, Kowonzer, who is ranked 3rd, is losing his temper more and more.
In the end, it is expected that victory or defeat will be determined by the direction of centrist votes, as the structure is narrowed down to a ‘US-China proxy war’.
